Carpooling Anxiety, Tell me I’m Not Alone

This past year we joined a carpool which flared up my parental anxiety. I was questioning myself a lot like: “Did my son make it safely?”, “Does the driver text and drive?”, “Does he speed?”, “Please tell me he doesn’t smoke in the car.”

Before committing fully to carpooling, I did all the right things. I created a safety checklist, I got to know the other parents, and talked to my son about the importance of following the carpool schedule. Yet the uneasiness didn’t go away.

I wanted to run away from the carpool. Who cares what the other parents think of me? Am I acting crazy? Totally. But I didn’t care. However, at the end I had to embrace it – not only I couldn’t manage all the rides for my kids by myself, it was my son who was asking for more independence as well.

“Hey mom, isn’t that David riding his bike back from McDonald’s?” My face flushed. It was. I wanted to point out that David was one year older, that he had more experience riding bikes.

“Yea. I think so.” I said lamely.

“When are you going to let me ride to McDonald’s?” he asked.

“I really haven’t thought about it.” Lie. Lie. Lie

“When do you think that I will be old enough to play on another street?”

“When you’re old enough.” Lame. Lame. Lame.

I wasn’t showing trust. I wasn’t helping him develop confidence through independence. I was raising a child who would likely live with me until the age of 30 while I sewed his initials into his underwear. I had to start somewhere and I decided to start by trusting the carpool.

Luckily for me, I was able to do it with the help of SaferChild technology.

SaferChild in Every Car in Your Carpool

There are many safety concerns when it comes to carpooling and SaferChild is one product that aims to solve them all.

SaferChild works using a mobile app and a small, battery powered device called the Smart Locator. What’s cool about the Smart Locator is that it’s battery operated and Wi-Fi independent.

Guess what that means? It means it will work in any car and that by purchasing only the basic 3-pack, you can put one in each of the cars in the carpool. You are covered! Since Smart Locators can be shared, not only you, also other parents benefits from the technology.

The benefit of placing a SaferChild Smart Locator in each car is that it can tell you exactly where your child is and when. It’s more accurate than using safety apps and it isn’t as big brother-ish as other solutions so your child still feels like a “big” kid.
Using the SaferChild setup you will be able to tell:

  • If your child got in the right car.
  • If your child is on-time.
  • Where your child is.
  • And you’ll be able to setup notifications.

The combination of the app and the Smart Locator makes everything happen like magic. As soon as your child hops into the scheduled car, you will get a notification. You’ll know if he wasn’t picked up at the scheduled time or if he was picked up but not dropped off. You can also reach the carpool driver with a quick click. In fact you don’t even have to remember who the driver du jour is as the app knows who is driving on what day and will connect you with the correct driver. (Of course, remember that your child is in their car and a phone call can be distracting.)

SaferChild Makes Independent Kids

The carpool schedules are entered into the app which puts your child in the driver’s seat. Not literally of course. But they will know who is picking them up, when, and where.

It’s not easy putting our children’s safety in the hands of someone else but watching your child grow through responsibility by showing confidence in him is priceless.
